The previous episode on learning presents learning as an integral part of our daily existence and highlights its core value in our lives. Its importance in improving life cannot be underestimated.
In the past, people placed high value on white-collar jobs because of how lucrative they were. As a result, many focused more on theoretical education with less emphasis on practical skills. Over the years, unemployment has increased significantly, which has led many people to consider skill acquisition. Despite these two approaches to learning—theoretical education and skill acquisition—there are different categories of people: some acquire neither, some acquire both, while others acquire only one of the two.
The next part of this discussion explains theoretical education and skill acquisition, compares them, and highlights some of the challenges encountered in the course of learning.
Theoretical Education
This is a system of education where people are taught how to read and write. Although schools include aspects of skill acquisition in their curriculum, in Nigeria, in-depth practical training is often limited.
Skill Acquisition
This involves learning hands-on skills such as barbing, tailoring, hair styling, and carpentry, among others. Some individuals choose this path when they cannot afford formal education or prefer practical learning to classroom-based instruction.
Comparison
Theoretical education generally offers a more structured approach to learning. This structure is reflected in classroom management, scheduled timetables, and regular student assessment, which allow time for rest and academic balance.
In contrast, some skill acquisition programs may involve stricter routines, including early resumption and late closing hours. In certain cases, trainees may also be required to carry out additional tasks outside their core training. However, this varies depending on the trainer and the learning environment.
Skill acquisition can sometimes be more physically demanding and time-intensive, which may result in less time for rest compared to formal schooling.
A basic level of education can enhance skill acquisition, particularly in areas such as measurement, record-keeping, and communication with customers, all of which contribute to professionalism.
The rising cost of formal education has influenced many individuals to consider skill acquisition as an alternative path.
Education can be acquired at any age when appropriate teaching methods are used, taking into account learners’ understanding levels and adapting instruction accordingly.
Skill acquisition is also open to people of different ages. However, older individuals may find certain training conditions challenging, especially when faced with strict routines or limited free time alongside other responsibilities.
