  • Colors of soil can be red, pale brown, dark brown, black, white, or gray. Soils from different countries and regions vary in color; iron oxides result in red soils which are common in tropical regions while salt and calcium carbonate in soils result in white soils.

Soil is a natural resource found all over the world. Even small islands have dry land covered with sand. Beneath water bodies, different kinds of soil exist. Mountainous areas are also surrounded by sand. Rocks break down into smaller particles due to land degradation, mining, weathering, and natural events such as rainfall and volcanic eruptions. This process enables plants to grow even in mountainous areas and on concrete surfaces.

Soil (sandy, clay, and loamy) is used worldwide in construction—building houses, roads, pavements, waste tanks, and bridges. It is also used to make concrete poles that support overhead electric cables.

Organic soils are valuable sources of fuel.

Certain types of soil, such as white clay, are used in medicine and cosmetics.

Soil also plays a role in the production of glass.

Some iron and steel products—especially cast iron—are made using a process called sand casting.

Soil absorbs carbon, helping to reduce the harmful effects of greenhouse gases.

Soil's ability to retain water helps prevent flooding.
