Accidents occur outside our homes, often taking over the headlines of many publications daily. But there are also incidents that happen in our homes, some of which can be fatal or leave people with lifelong injuries.
Therefore, proper home management and safety practices are important to reduce, if not eliminate, avoidable accidents in our homes. Achieving this goal is everyone's responsibility—a bachelor, spinster, father, mother and children.
Let's look at some common but sometimes neglected home safety practices:
- Disconnect all appliances and equipment from the socket after use.
- Leave security lights switched on while switching off unnecessary internal lights at bedtime or late at night.
- Keep your home clean, disinfect where necessary, control rodents and prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home.
- For a manually lit gas cooker, ignite your match or lighter first, then turn the gas knob slightly to release gas and ignite the flame. Never allow gas to flow for several seconds before ignition.
- Always keep the home floor dry to avoid slips and falls, which can cause serious injury or even death.
- If you slip, avoid stretching your hands stiffly behind you. Protect your head and try to reduce the impact of the fall.
- Where possible, your home should have an alternative exit in case of an emergency.
- Don't use a gas cooker, electric cooker or kettle when dizzy or extremely tired. You could fall asleep and cause a fire or suffer burns.
- Never touch exposed wires or powered electrical appliances with wet hands or while barefoot on a wet surface.
- Cover cooked foods properly and preserve food and drinks appropriately.
