Soil: Types, Characteristics, and Benefits to People

Soil is a natural substance consisting of fine particles, varying in size and proportion depending on the soil type. In some cases, these differences may be insignificant.

Types of Soil:

Sandy, clay, loamy, and humus soil.

Characteristics of Soil

  • Sandy Soil: Composed of tiny stony particles, sandy soil is typically pale brown, dark brown, gray, or even black. It has very low water retention due to its high porosity.
  • Clay Soil: This soil type has the smallest particle size, making it highly fertile. It becomes sticky when wet and forms large, heavy clods when dry. Clay soil absorbs water slowly and retains moisture for a long time, making it heavy to work with.
  • Loamy Soil: A balanced mixture of sand, clay, and silt, loamy soil is smooth, silky, and sometimes greasy if it contains organic matter.
  • Humus Soil: Formed from decayed plant and animal matter, humus soil is thick, dark brown or black in color. Its quality depends on the decomposition rate and environmental conditions.
