Masjid in Dubai and the Government
Masjid, an Arabic word for mosque, is a sacred place of worship for Muslims in any part of the world where it is situated. The United Arab Emirates, a well-known Muslim country where the majority of its population are Muslims. The government supports this institution and regulates its affairs. In addition to other existing laws, locals are governed by Islamic laws. This implies that travellers or tourists visiting the country for the first time should be guided and respectful of the enforcement of these laws.
The government announces or publishes recruitment opportunities for Imams, Muezzins, and, in some cases, a Khadim who oversees and cleans the mosque. Interestingly, qualified applicants from other countries with a resident permit can apply for these positions and are paid monthly salaries.
Occasionally, government officials visit mosques and interact with a few Muslim worshippers before or after prayers to gather feedback on their impressions and suggestions for improvement. However, only those with a valid resident permit can participate in this survey.
Dubai Municipality, a government agency responsible for environmental inspection and sanitation, visits mosques regularly for inspection and cleaning. They assess the cleanliness of the mosque and remove any litter found in the surroundings. Strict warnings are occasionally issued to individuals inhabiting areas around mosques—mainly those facing accommodation challenges—who sleep, sun-dry clothes, or leave their belongings in open spaces. Authorities may sometimes remove such items. Sleeping inside the mosque is strictly prohibited by both the government and Dubai Police, except during Itikaf. Apart from legal restrictions, Islamic traditional beliefs discourage this practice to preserve the sanctity of the mosque and prevent inappropriate occurrences, such as impure thoughts or wet dreams, while in an unconscious state.
The government also organizes Quranic memorization programs for children, promoting religious education and awarding educational sponsorships. Quranic books, refrigerators, water, toiletries, and other facilities are provided by the government, with additional contributions from individuals.
Donations from well-wishers are collected by the government using metal and wooden boxes placed in mosques, supermarkets, malls, and workplaces to support mosque operations and sustain charitable programs.
