Indeed, there will be a time to rest, a time to drop the pen, after working for many years. This episode narrates the ordeal of some retirees in Nigeria.

In 2024, a retired police officer expressed his disappointment after serving the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years, only to end up with a retirement benefit of about ₦2 million.

In June 2025, another retired police officer revealed that he relied solely on a ₦46,000 monthly pension to survive, describing the hardship of meeting family needs with such meagre income.

Also in August 2025, University of Maiduguri lecturers protested a shameful ₦150,000 retirement pension for professors and they blasted the university for renamimg the institution after the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

To date, there have been cases of neglect of past heroes, especially footballers. The mother of Rashidi Yekini once cried out for government attention after the death of her son. Although the Kwara State Government and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development later intervened, she had already endured severe hardship. There have also been reported cases of ex-footballers living in poverty, such as Wilson Oruma, and rumours about others facing similar struggles.

    In August 2025, the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Minister of Interior, announced a new welfare policy granting a lifetime salary to senior officers in paramilitary agencies — such as the Immigration Service, Correctional Service, Civil Defence, and Fire Service — retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Commandant-General, and above. This policy, however, does not cover Police or Customs officers.
