A place often compared to New York for its hustling, bustling, and booming activities is Lagos, a metropolitan state where people from other parts of the country have settled in search of livelihood opportunities.

Geographically, Lagos State has both plains and coastal areas with varying water depths. Groundwater levels can reach as deep as 100–120 feet in some inland areas, while coastal areas may have water at depths of less than 10 feet. There are road networks and bridges that interconnect the coastal and inland areas, though traffic congestion occurs during both the day and night.

Lagos is broadly divided into two sub-regions: Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland. Most company headquarters are situated on Lagos Island, while a few headquarters and other subsidiaries are located on the Lagos Mainland. The two regions differ in opportunities, cost of living, comfort, and other factors that influence where people choose to reside.

Lagos State has multiple indigenous groups, chiefly the Awori, Eko, and Ijebu, while also being home to many other Nigerian ethnic groups.
